Drunk man was walking on the road in Mountmellick
The man appeared before Portlaoise District Court
A man was arrested after being found walking on the road while intoxicated in Mountmellick.
Patrick McInerney, 41, of 5 Oak Drive, Ballacollig, Mountemellick was arrested at Oak Drive, Ballacollig on September 16, 2023.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the accused was arrested while walking on the road.
“This gentleman was walking on the road all in black,” he said.
The defendant, who was “unsteady on his feet”, began “roaring and shouting” when asked to get off the road, Sgt Kirby said. He said the man had eight previous convictions.
Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client wished to apologise. She explained that he had lost both his mother and mother in law prior to the incident. She said he met up with a friend and began drinking. She said he had brought a sum of €100 to court.
Judge Nicola Andrews noted the man’s early plea and the fact that his last previous conviction dated back to 2011. She struck the matter out after the defendant paid €50 to the court poor box.
