Portlaoise councillor has seen three children using single scooter at once

The law around electric scooters was once again raised at a Laois Joint Policing Meeting.

Sinn Fein Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley said she has seen “two or three children at a time” using scooters “at huge speed” without helmets or protection.

She said people quite rightly aren’t allowed to drive a car without insurance yet the scooters are being used in public.

“They are really, really dangerous. There is people using them on the footpaths, flying past you,” said Cllr Dwane Stanley.

Garda Superintendent Eamon Curley said he wasn’t aware of the enactment of any law in relation to scooters.

He said if there is a collision involving a scooter, a file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions(DPP) to consider whether or not a prosecution is warranted.
