Laois voters very concerned about road safety

Road safety was a major issue on the canvas in Laois at the local elections, according to a re-elected councillor.

Cllr Ollie Clooney, independent, communicated the fears among voters he canvased to Laois County Council officils at a recent meeting in County Hall Portlaoise.

“Every second house in my area was concerned about the issue of road safety and speed,” he said.

Cllr Clooney commented when agreeing with his fellow independent Cllr James Kelly at the July meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District.

Cllr Kelly said the meeting was dominated by road issues which he believed conveyed a message to the council on spending for 2025. MORE BELOW PICTURE.placeholder image

“Out of our 18 motions about 14 are about road safety. It is something that we in the council have to look at in our budget for next year,” he said.

Other councillors shared their concerns at the meeting which was attended by Director of Services Donal Brennan and James Dowling who is a Senior Executive Engineer in the council’s roads section.
