The issue arose at a county council meeting

Additional staff were requested to help Laois County Council staff who are ‘flat out’ working on the electoral register.

The issue arose when Fine Gael Cllr Willie Aird asked if the council would hold Civic Receptions for a group of award winning Timahoe school children and new IFA President Francie Gorman ahead of the upcoming local elections.

“Corporate services is very aware of this and the staff of Corporate Services have been working very hard for the last number of weeks on the register, which is taking far more time than normal,” said Director of Services, Donal Brennan.

“We are trying to see can we get slots where there is going to be a lull in that,” he said.

Mr Brennan said staff were “working flat out” on the register and they would try to find dates for the receptions between now and the elections in June.

Fine Gael Cllr Willie Aird asked ”will I propose that you get extra staff then because that’s not going to go away between now and the local elections?”

“There is people going to be coming in here day in, day out with forms. The more councillors go out on the road canvassing the more forms you are going to get to bring back in with people that’s not on it,” he said.

“I am proposing here that if there is a problem there that you apply more staff to it,”  Cllr Aird said.
