Extra streetlight sought for walkers in heritage Laois town

A road popular with walkers in a Laois heritage town is in need of better lighting.
Tidy Town national winners Abbeyleix is getting an extra Christmas illumination, to make it safer for pedestrians.
Cllr Thomasina Connell tabled a motion to the December meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, asking for an extra light on the Carlow Road.
She said many residents used the route walking to the town centre.
In reply Laois County Council engineer said that the roads office has already commissioned a contractor to install an extra light on the Carlow Road.
The light was to be switched on within weeks of the early December meeting.
"Thank you, residents are thrilled. A lot of people use the road to walk in and out of Abbeyleix. You have made such a quick effort, I'm looking forward to seeing the Carlow Road illuminated," she said.
