Fleming delighted as Fianna Fail perform well in Laois

Padraig Fleming "in the mix" to retain his seat
Fianna Fail's Padraig Fleming believes he is very much “in the mix” to keep his seat in the Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
He doesn’t expect to know whether he has been elected for some time and he believes no candidate will be elected in the area on the first count.
“From what we can make out based on the tallies I don’t think anybody is going to reach the quota,” he said.
He was delighted with Fianna Fail’s performance nationally and said the results put the party five percent above the opinion poll expectations of 17 percent.
“It is going to take a while yet,” he said while waiting on the first count at the Count Centre in Portlaoise today.
“As regards myself I am very confident I am up there in the mix with them all. I am very happy with the result I got from the people and I really appreciate it,” he said.
He said Fianna Fail had performed well and Laois and he expects the party will have some new councillors when the counting ends.
“What they are saying now is the national opinion polls are always putting Fianna Fail at 17 percent but they will end up at 22 percent at the local all across the country,” said Mr Fleming.
He said that was reflected on the doorsteps during the campaign.
“The reactions I got on the doors were all very positive,” he recalled.
“The people weren’t giving out. They had issues, they weren’t giving out as such. People were very nice at the doors,” he said.
