Four second-half goals proved crucial for Laois

The Laois Camogie side have a league final to look forward to as they fired five goals past Kildare in today’s semi-final in Mountrath.

Laois were guilty of coughing up easy scoring opportunities as they fired in eight wides with only two points separating the teams at the break.

Laois 5-6

Kildare 0-5

Laois got off to the better start as Susie Delaney teed up Eimear Hassett to point for the game’s first score. Hassett made it two points shortly after as she raised a white flag from play. With 10 minutes on the clock, Laois had registered four bad wides while Kildare had yet to score. The away side’s opening point came courtesy of Sara Carroll as she split the posts after 11 minutes.

The first Laois goal was simple in its making as Aedin Lowry played a puck-out to Clodagh Tynan before she passed to Hassett. Hassett then setup Aimee Collier to blast the ball into the Kildare net. Kildare responded well as they got the final two scores of the half. Lea Sutton pointed a free with Aoife McDermott raising a white flag from play. Laois goalkeeper Aedin Lowry was on hand to intercept a dangerous attack as she came out to bat the ball away. Laois led 1-2 to 0-3 at the break.

Kildare’s Lea Sutton made it a one-point game with a free but that would be their last score for some time as Laois took the game to their opponents. Collier (free) and Andrea Scully added a point each to Laois’ tally. Laois’ next two scores came from two substitutes as Grainne Delaney and Lucy O’Connor both rattled the back of the net to give Laois a nine-point advantage. O’Connor was to the fore again as she got her second goal in as many minutes with a superb finish. There was a lull of scores for a period as both sides made multiple changes to their teams. Lea Sutton ended Kildare’s scoring drought as she pointed a free.

Collier pushed Laois’ lead to 13 points as she got her second and third point from placed balls before O’Connor completed her hat trick late on.

Laois will now face Armagh in the league final after they defeated Roscommon in the other semi-final.
