The team at the Anvil Comedy Club is promising to bring the best of Irish comedy to Portarlington.

The pub is hosting a stand-up night in their Anvil Comedy Club on Friday, October 13. The comedy club started in February and has been going from strength to strength since.

The night was started by Colman Hayes who has just returned from Edinburg Fringe after a sold-out run of his play Best Man. Shannon Basso Gaule has come aboard as a host on the night. Shannon is resident host of multiple comedy clubs in the South East and is a regular at comedy clubs in all around the country.

The organisers outlined the features at the next show.

“We have an amazing headliner Ashlee Bently. Described by many as one of the most talented and original up-and-coming comedians in Ireland today, Ashlee’s unique blend of quirky humour, sharp writing and brutally honest yet hilarious personal tales have left audience members in tears all over Ireland and beyond. Ashlee was crowned winner of the 2016 Show Me The Funny Competition and in 2017 won the Ireland Regional Final of Funny Women. She has supported the likes of Tommy Tiernan, Fern Brady and Olga Koch,” says the Club.

Support on the night come from Jess Collins and Stewart Lambert.

“Stewart Lambert started stand up in 2018. Since then his dry and often surreal style has brought him all around the country and the UK to some of best comedy clubs, festivals and competitions including Show Me The Funny '23 runner up and So You Think You're Funny UK,” says the Club.

A Dublin native is also coming the Laois venue.

“Jess Collins is a performer you will not forget in a hurry. Born and raised in Dublin, Jess is hilarious, authentic and unafraid of creating tension where there is none. Over the course of the past five years, Jess has gone from paying to see her favourite Irish comedians perform to sharing some of the biggest stages in the country with them.

“Jess is a wildly popular comedian in the Irish scene and her CV includes appearances at Electric Picnic, Galway Comedy Festival, the Vodafone Comedy Festival and the finals of Ireland’s national comedy competition, Show Me The Funny. She is also a regular guest and MC at Tigh Heehee in the famous Róisín Dubh, Galway.

"The skill with which Jess engages her audience through storytelling is remarkable. While she is on stage, every single person in the room feels like they’re at her kitchen table with a cup of tea in hand, in the middle of the most entertaining catch-up you can imagine.

“However, for all the comfort her style brings, her material will have you sore from laughing in no time. Jess’ observations on things such as dating, Disney and growing old gracefully has won the hearts and minds of audiences all over Ireland.

“Her journey to the stage took some time, but make no mistake; Jess is a comedian whose career promises to be a long and hugely successful one,” says the club.

The October 13 event starts at 9pm and doors open at 8:30 tickets are €10 and available on Eventbrite and on the door.
