HSE warns of high strength ecstacy tablets and 3-CMC in MDMA powder at Electric Picnic

The HSE said its onsite testing lab has had a busy day at Electric Picnic
Drug testers at the Electric Picnic have discovered high strength ecstasy pills and powders sold as MDMA containing a different substance.
“Powders sold as MDMA contained 3-CMC, a different unpredictable stimulant. 3-CMC can be more compulsive, and may carry higher risks because people don't know they're taking it,” the HSE Harm Reduction Team said.
They explained that some substances sold as one drug turned out to be something different when tested by our lab.
“Some MDMA pills we tested were very high-strength. High-strength MDMA raises the risk of overheating, dehydration, heart strain, and can affect your mental health too. Remember the HSE advice, it's safer not to use,” they stated.
People who feel unwell are urged to seek immediate assistance.
The HSE said its Emerging Drugs Lab has had a very busy first day at Electric Picnic.
They reminded people that it was safer not to use at all but advised drug users attending the festival of a number of ‘Harm Reduction Tips’.
These include, “start low, go slow. If you choose to use, take a very small amount first and wait at least two hours. Stay cool. Take breaks from dancing, and avoid overheating. Sip water regularly (but don’t overdo it — about one pint per hour is enough).
The HSE team also advised people not to mix substances. Combinations increase risks.
“Stick with friends and look out for each other. If something feels wrong, get help early. Medics at festivals are there to help without judgement. Give them a sample of what was taken if you can,” they said.
