'If you don't slow down...' ramp threat suggested for speeding Laois traffic

Speed an issue in Ballyroan village as new traffic signs requested
Laois councillors are calling for drivers to slow down, and one is suggesting the threat of a ramp to get the message across.
While Cllr Barry Walsh tabled his motion to the Portlaoise Municipal District this September to ask for traffic calming in the fast growing village of Ballyroan, Cllr Willie Aird suggested a warning sign of a different kind.
"What if we put up signs to say 'if speeders don't slow, ramps will be installed'? That's the only thing that slows them," he said.
Cllr Walsh's request for traffic calming follows on from a traffic safety assessment done by Laois County Council in Ballyroan last year.
"This is step one of traffic calming for Ballyroan. The audit showed people are driving well over the speed limits. The next step is the final design for the old boys' school. When I was out canvassing, a major issue was the speeding traffic, especially when kids are walking home from school," he said.
He wants Laois County Council to consider local amenities and facilities wherever they place the signs. The council will now get its road design team to review the existing signs and develop a proposal for signage for Ballyroan.
Cllr Willie Aird had seconded the motion.
"One of the biggest issues is speed. People want the same as is what is on the Meelick road in Portlaoise, ramps," he said.
