In all 66 students and five teachers embarked on a thrilling five-day tour of Barcelona, Spain, on Wednesday April 26. The TYs students had a jam-packed itinerary of activities to make the most of their trip.

One highlight was the visit to the science museum and aquarium, where the students got to see fascinating exhibits and learn about different aspects of science.

They also had the opportunity to take in a magic show, which left them spellbound and wondering how the illusions were performed.

Another highlight was the visit to Montserrat, a mountain range near Barcelona that is famous for its spectacular views and stunning scenery.

The students took a cable car up the mountain and were awed by the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

They spent an entire day at Port Aventura theme park enjoying thrilling rides, and even managed to squeeze in bowling and swimming.

Many of the students said it was one of the best weeks of their lives. The trip was not only fun and exciting, but also educational and informative, giving the students a chance to learn about science, history, and culture in a fun and engaging way.

The students returned home with memories that will last a lifetime and a renewed sense of curiosity and adventure.

The school was full of pride for a talented and politically aware student who has won a trip to the European Parliament.

Transition Year student Olivia Parlon, won an annual essay competition held by MEP Sean Kelly, earning a three-day trip to the European Parliament in Brussels.

Her essay focused on the impact that the EU has had on Ireland, and her thoughtful and insightful analysis impressed the judges.

The competition is open to students across Ireland, and aims to encourage young people to engage with politics and learn more about the role of the European Union in shaping policy and governance.

This year's topic was particularly relevant given the ongoing discussions around Brexit and the future of the EU.

Olivia will now have the opportunity to visit the European Parliament in Brussels and learn more about how the institution works and the role that MEPs play in shaping policy and legislation.

The school principal is Katherine O'Brien.

“We at Mountrath CS are incredibly proud of Olivia and her achievement, and we know that she will make the most of this amazing opportunity,” she said.

SciFest 2023 took place on Wednesday, May 3 in TU Dublin and Mountrath CS was not to be found wanting with double wins.

A group of fifteen Transition year students and two second years students set off to take part.

“Mountrath CS are delighted with the huge work put in by all our students and we congratulate Sarah Phelan and Doireann O'Connor who won the Agricultural Science Award sponsored by Dawn Meats for their project on Aquaculture and Nadine Lawlor, Edel Meade and Anna Ryan who won the Boston Scientific Award for their project on endometriosis,” the principal said.

Last and not least this May was the Junk Couture Final 2023, held in the glamorous 3Arena in Dublin.

The school has sent huge congratulations to Sarah Phelan, Cameron Doyle and Leah Rice who were selected to exhibit their design ‘On Brave Wings She Flies’ in the Junk Couture Grand Finale.

Two buses of supporters along with their teachers headed for Dublin last Thursday to cheer on the team as they took to the stage.

The three students had created the dress from milk filterage socks, wire, loofahs and a corset.

“Well done to these TY students for such an amazing achievement,” the school said.
