Members of Portlaoise Men’s Shed and Mountrath Men’s Shed have taken part in a hands-on repair workshop delivered with TOG Hackerspace, building practical skills that support reuse, repair and climate action.
The organisers said the workshop was funded under the 2026 Laois Climate Action Festival and gave participants an opportunity to learn by doing. During the session, members made an extension lead and learned about the importance of electrical safety.
The completed extension lead was Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) tested, demonstrating how repaired or newly assembled electrical items can be checked before use.
By developing repair skills, the workshop encouraged participants to extend the life of everyday items, reduce waste and share practical knowledge.
Suzanne Dempsey, A/Climate Action Co-Ordinator at Laois County Council, commented on the event.
“This workshop showed how practical repair skills can bring people together while supporting climate action. Participants gained useful knowledge that can help extend the life of everyday items and reduce waste.”
Laois County Council acknowledged TOG Hackerspace, Portlaoise Men’s Shed and Mountrath Men’s Shed for their participation and contribution to the workshop.
The Laois Climate Action Festival 2026 runs from October 8th to 19th, featuring over 30 free community events, talks, workshops, and exhibitions.
Ms Dempsey outlines the nature of the event.
“The Laois Climate Action Festival gives us a wonderful opportunity to shine a light on climate action heroes across County Laois - from individuals and schools to community groups and businesses whose ideas and actions are helping to create a greener, more resilient county. By celebrating their achievements, we hope to inspire even more people to get involved and take positive climate action in their own communities,” she said.
The festival programme included Éanna Ní Lamhna, John Gibbons, Kitty Scully, Kevin Scully of Merry Mills, Tog Hackerspace, Climate Escape Rooms, Ballykilcavan Farm & Brewery, Laois Friends, Wildfood Mary, Richard Duff Hides, Ossory Fest Schools Mini Travel Festival, Laois Forest School, Hey Pesto!, Abbeyleix Bog, Dunamaise Arts Centre, Laois Arthouse, Race Right Cycles and Roundwood House.
