More than 30 children showcased their talents as clubs from across Laois gathered for the annual celebration of Irish culture

Sunday, June 14, saw clubs from across the county gathered in Halla Naomh Fiontáin, Maighean Rátha, for Laois GAA’s annual Scór na bPáistí competition, celebrating the best of music, song, dance and culture.

Over thirty children took part, representing their local GAA clubs across several competitions. The competitive comradery featured both solo and group performances, with children taking to the stage in categories including singing, group music, recitation, novelty act and tráth na gceist.

Laois GAA’s newly appointed Irish Language and Culture Officer Conor de Faoite, said that the event continues to play an important role in connecting young people in Laois with their clubs.

“Scór na bPáistí is fantastic because it allows children to represent their local GAA club off the field,” he said. “GAA clubs are the heart of our communities and Scór gives club members the opportunity to come together in a different setting, while still proudly representing their local team.”

He praised the standard of talent on display across the county and highlighted Laois GAA’s continued commitment to supporting cultural activities such as Scór.

“Here in Laois, we have some of the best singers, dancers and musicians in all of Ireland. Laois GAA is committed to celebrating and supporting that talent. The link between our clubs and our cultural arts is growing stronger every year, and we hope to see that continue right through to adult level.”

“Imagine when these children win a county final in ten or fifteen years’ time. Their off-the-field talents will be an integral part of the celebrations. In fifty or sixty years time, they will still be able to perform, long after their days on the field end.”

Scór continues to be an important part of the GAA calendar in Laois. Scór Sinsir, for adults, took place in March, while Scór na nÓg, for teenagers, is set to begin this November.

De Faoite also noted the growing interest in Irish language and culture amongst younger players in the county.

“An Ghaeilge is certainly seeing a resurgence across generations and Laois GAA are attempting to capture this. We have a great language and culture committee and there is real momentum building behind it. If anyone else is interested in helping us out, let us know and we’d be delighted to have you. Bígí linn!”
