Councillors call for action

A junction near a Laois school was described as “dangerous” at a recent council meeting.

Fianna Fail Councillor Seamus McDonald raised the issue of junction while discussing a motion on safety measures at Clonaghadoo School.

He asked in a motion “that Laois County Council  put in place safety measures at Clonaghadoo School.”

“This is a dangerous area. It is a junction with four roads… there is no stop signs or anything,” he explained.

“It is a dangerous area and it needs attention straight away,” said Cllr McDonald.

Fianna Fail Cllr Paddy Bracken said he wanted to “fully support” the motion.

“We did look at that before and we were promised work and it was never done,” he claimed.

“It needs to be done. It is a very busy school out there and that is a very dangerous junction."

Independent Cllr James Kelly described it as a “very dangerous junction”.

He asked about the upkeep of the flashing signs on both sides of the school.

“If we have an issue with those, is it Laois County Council is looking after that?” he asked.

He said a number of years ago batteries were stolen from the flashing lights.

Cllr Kelly was told the lights are being maintained by Laois County Council.

In response to the motion, Senior Executive Engineer Edmund Kenny said: “Laois County Council will examine the safety issues at this location and will consider options for improving safety at this location.”

The issue was discussed at the January meeting of Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District.
