A vehicle that crashed into a stone bridge near Portlaoise has caused damage to the structure.

Laois County Council was alerted to the damage, by Cllr Willie Aird.

He tabled a motion to the September meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, asking for the bridge to be repaired "as a matter of urgency" at Knocknagrove / Cooltoran.

"Unfortunately someone hit the bridge. It's out the Ridge Road where you turn right towards Rathevan.

"A lot of traffic is using that road," he said.

The area engineer for the district Wes Wilkinson said that repairs will be carried out in coming weeks.
