Laois County Council is not happy to keep paying for the county morgue.

The council last year paid a bill of €176,026 for morgue services in Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise.

That was €35,000 more than they had budgeted for and expected to pay, which was €140,505.

The Director of Services Simon Walton said they are asking the Department to take on the costs.

He spoke at the May meeting of Laois County Council where the total spend in 2022 in Laois was shown to be over €91 million.

"Regarding Cllr Kelly, I agree with you 100%. We are in continual consultations to the department for the department to take this on," he said.

Cllr James Kelly had raised his discontent that the council has to foot the cost of the medical service.

"We as a local authority are still providing funding. I see it cost an additional €35,000, up to €176,000. I am always looking for the department to fund this," he said.
