Gardaí now have the power to prosecute drivers who use non conforming number plates

Portlaoise District Court was told non conforming number plates cannot be read by the Garda ANPR system.

Shania McCormack(25) of 4 Oak Drive, Ballacollig, Mountmelick had non conforming number plates on the Abbeyleix Road, Portlaoise on October 27.

Garda Dylan Hogan said he stopped the 182 registered black Ford Focus on the Abbeyleix Road and issued a fine which wasn’t paid. He said the accused had no previous convictions.

Solicitor Philip Meagher said his client was pleading guilty. He said his client had worked in retail until recently.

Garda Hogan said the number plates do not register on the Garda ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) system and Gardaí had only been given powers to prosecute for the non conforming plates in the last year and a half.

Mr Meagher said “she wasn’t aware that she was breaking the law.”

Judge Susan Fay fined the woman €130 for each number plate and gave her six months to pay the fine.
