Form Fine Gael councillor eyes town support

East Laois independent county councillor Aisling Moran took to the streets of Portlaoise in search of vital Portlaoise votes in her bid to represent Laois people in the next Dáil.

Cllr Moran formally submitted her nomination papers with the Returning Officer, Rory Hanniffy at the Courthouse in Portlaoise on Friday, November 15.

She was accompanied by members of her campaign team including fellow Independent councillors Ben Brennan and Tommy Mulligan who, with Cllr James Kelly, are supporting her campaign.

Her campaign team said she went on the canvas in Portlaoise afterwards calling into the businesses on Main St in Portlaoise to discuss with them the challenges and issues facing small businesses and the retail sector. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

Cllr Moran left Fine Gael in 2023 after falling out with colleagues locally on council issues and disagreeing with the party on its direction. Her father contested the General Election in 2011 for Fine Gael but was unsuccessful.

She was first elected to Laois County Council in 2019 for the big Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District which stretches from the Offaly border in Port to Graiguecullen on the Carlow border. Cllr Moran comfortably retained her seat in the 2024 local elections as an independent.

Laois voters will got to the polling booths in 114 polling stations on Friday, November 29 with the count being held in the Nano Nagle Hall in the Scoil Chríost Rí / St Mary's CBS school complex on the Borris Road in Portlaoise.
