Laois' Kieran Kelly reflects on resilient effort despite quarter-final defeat to Meath

Meath ended Laois' participation in this year's Leinster U-20 Championship
Following a closely contested quarter-final against Meath in the U-20 Leinster Championship, the Laois U-20 manager opened up about the game, expressing a blend of disappointment and admiration for his team's performance.
"Really, really disappointed, the game was in the mental pot there," the manager began, reflecting on the outcome. "Unfortunately, they got a goal off an error, not going to blame anyone."
Despite facing an early setback, the manager commended his players for their unwavering spirit. "The boys showed incredible, incredible character to come back and to be only two points down at half-time and then we actually led in the second half," he remarked. "Just really, really proud of the boys, the way they put the shoulder to the wheel."
Addressing the goals conceded, the manager provided insights into the game's pivotal moments. "The first goal, the ball went in, kind of skidded, Jake (Darcy) I think nearly had it, but unfortunately, it slipped into the Meath lad and Conor (Brown) got a hand to it," he explained. "The second one was a deflection as well, so the boys put their bodies on the line."
Acknowledging the learning curve for his young squad, the manager stressed the importance of gaining experience and stepping up to senior level football. "It's a step up to senior. In fairness, a lot of them lads will step up to senior," he noted. "That's what the U-20 is there for."
The manager also praised his team's belief and determination in the face of formidable opposition. "Credit to Meath, they were the All-Ireland Champions three years ago," he acknowledged. "We knew coming up here what a task it was. I'd say no one gave us a prayer coming up, but we believed in that dressing room."
In conclusion, the manager expressed pride in his players' efforts and highlighted the collaborative spirit within the team. "I’m really, really proud of those guys tonight and look it these things happen," he concluded. "It was great working with the management team. Everyone played their part, but at the end of the day, unfortunately, we were defeated tonight."
Looking ahead, the manager remains optimistic about the future of Laois football. "It's certainly a team now to build on," he affirmed. "The future is bright for Laois."
