The man was accused of obtaining a child for sexual exploitation

A Laois man appeared in court accused of defiling a child and obtaining a child for sexual exploitation.

The man (48), who cannot be named due to reporting restrictions, is alleged to have committed the offences in Laois in 2021.

He is accused of defilement of a child under 17 on November 11, 2021 and obtaining a child for the purposes of sexual exploitation on November 2, 2021 and November 11, 2021.

Garda Lisa Murray served the defendant with a book of evidence at a sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

Garda Sgt JJ Kirby said the DPP had directed that the defendant should be sent forward to the next sittings of Portlaoise Circuit Court sitting on June 11.

Judge Nicola Andrews sent the case forward to the next sittings of Portlaoise Circuit Court sitting on June 11. She remanded the defendant on bail subject to conditions previously imposed.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick requested legal aid for two counsel for the case due to the “serious” nature of the allegations. She also requested reporting restrictions.

Judge Andrews consented to both requests.
