A jail sentence was  handed down to a man who was caught driving without insurance for the sixth time.

Aaron Kilpatrick(30) of Grange Hall, Mountmellick admitted not having a licence or insurance at Grange Hall, Mountmellick on April 19, 2024.

Garda Sergeant Jason Hughes said the defendant had 24 previous convictions including five for no insurance. The man was handed a six month suspended sentence at a court sitting in March, Sgt Hughes told the court.

Brian Mallon BL told the sitting of Portlaoise District Court that his client was engaged and is working in a warehouse of a courier company.

He explained that the man had repaired the brakes on his fiance’s car and was test driving it. He said the man only drove the car a short distance inside the estate before being stopped.

“He accepts that it was a foolish error on his part,” said Mr Mallon.

“I will be asking the court to be as lenient as possible,” he added.

Judge Andrew Cody noted the man was “repeatedly offending” as he handed down a six month prison sentence for no insurance.  He took the charge of having no driving licence into account and fixed recognisance in case of appeal.
