Lorcan Holohan will now represent Ireland at the upcoming European Championships in Serbia

Portlaoise Boxing Club had plenty to celebrate last weekend after one of their rising stars, Lorcan Holohan, was crowned All-Ireland champion at the National Senior Cadets finals on Friday night.

Competing in the highly competitive 63kg weight division, which featured 20 contenders, the Laois boxer had to come through an intense series of five bouts to secure the national title. In the final, he faced Phoenix Kenny of the Ball-Doyle Boxing Club in Dublin, a formidable opponent with a glittering CV as a four-time national champion.

But Holohan rose to the occasion, producing a brilliant performance and earning a unanimous decision victory to take the title. His success means he will now go on to represent Ireland at the upcoming European Championships in Serbia, a huge honour for the young Laois boxer and his club.

There was also a near miss for Portlaoise’s Jack Cahill, who fought in the 52kg category. Cahill made it to the final, where he came up against Liam Snoddy of the renowned Immaculata Boxing Club in Belfast. Snoddy is a seven-time national champion, but Cahill showed no fear, delivering a top-class performance. Despite his best efforts and a very close contest, Cahill was edged out on a split decision.

The club paid tribute to both fighters for their commitment and performances at a national level. Holohan’s success marked another major milestone for the ever-improving Portlaoise club.
