A Laois psychology student is playing an important role as a college ambassador at Maynooth University providing guidance to younger pupils.

Portarlington native, Rachel McGettrick, who is now in her final year, experienced first hand remote learning during the pandemic and when she returned to campus she was committed to making the most of college life.

This led her to join the Student Ambassador Programme where she has assisted prospective students for the past

three years, offering insights into the academic and social community that defines the University.

“I recall my first day on campus - finding myself with a group of strangers who were just as nervous as I was,” said Rachel.

“The warm reception from the Orientation Team and other students made us feel welcome. However, lockdown soon hit, and we were all faced with the unforeseen challenges of being confined to our laptop screens.

“Once we returned to campus, I was determined to make the most of college life. This is where my engagement with the University started to grow.”

Rachel said being part of the Student Ambassador Programme has been particularly gratifying as it allows her to offer guidance to those navigating the same decision-making process that she once faced.

“This experience has not only connected me with other Ambassadors but has also refined my communication and

leadership skills,” she added.

“This past year, I have extended my contributions to campus atmosphere as a committee member of the Psychology Society. Beyond the lecture halls, the friends I have made during my time here have been an invaluable aspect of my university life.”

Maynooth University Student Ambassadors will be at the Spring Open Day on Saturday, April 27 to speak with prospective applicants, parents and guardians about their degree course, subjects, campus facilities and life at the University.
