Laois rental homes on sale snapped up by council for tenants

Laois private tenants facing eviction by landlords who have decided to sell up, are being rescued by Laois County Council which is buying their homes so they can stay on renting, but as council tenants instead.
The council is buying or considering buying 16 houses where tenants were issued a Notice to Quit, using the recent Tenant In Situ funding.
In all in 2023 it bought 12 houses, with five more underway, and is considering a further 18.
More notices to quit were issued by landlords after April 1 when the ban on evictions was lifted.
Meanwhile some of the Laois notices issued on tenants were not valid, after checks were carried out on their legality.
“There have been 73 notices to quit reported to LCC of which 60 are valid. All are examined on a case by case basis and tenants are being dealt with using all social and other housing options available,” they say.
Tenants are urged to contact the housing department in the council if they are given a Notice to Quit, with the rental market in Laois continuing to show extreme shortages.
The figures given at the June council meeting were from the January 1 to May 31 period.
