Problem first raised last year in Portlaoise Municipal District

Laois roadside trees at Abbeyleix are still damaging vehicles, a year since tree surgery was requested.

A tree lined stretch of the N77 roadway between Abbeyleix and Durrow is again the topic of a motion tabled to a meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.

Fianna Fáil Cllr John Joe Fennelly described the problem that he said he asked to be tackled a year ago in another motion.

"If busses or big lorries are travelling on this road, as they move in the trees are taking their mirrors off. There is a lot of young trees on this road. It needs to be done as soon as possible. I presume you do not have to wait for the hedgecutting season," he said.

His motion seeks that "this Council contact the TII to cut back all branches of trees overhaning the road on the N77 between Killamuck Cross and Moran's Cross, Abbeyleix".

Fine Gael Cllr Barry Walsh seconded the motion.

In reply, senior engineer Wes Wilkinson said that the Portlaoise MD Office will contact the relevant landowners and the TII to carry out the works as appropriate.
