Lights were first requested for the piece in 2016

A councillor was baffled at the council’s failure to light up a plough installation on a roundabout in Laois.

Independent Cllr Aidan Mullins has been requesting the installation of seven lights on the Starry Plough on the roundabout in Portarlington since 2016.

He asked in a motion “that Laois County Council energise the lights on the Starry Plough on Kilnacourt  roundabout in Portarlington which was installed as part of the 1916 Centenary  Commemoration.”

“I don’t like to be bitching but it seems to me that it should be a simple issue to resolve,” said Cllr Mullins.

He said he has raised the issue in motions every years since 2016 and he couldn’t understand why the lighting is proving so difficult.

In a written response, Senior Engineer, Paul McLoughlin said “Laois County Council will revisit the request to provide the feature lighting at this location having previously been unsuccessful with arriving at a suitable and cost effective solution.”

Cllr Mullins’ motion was seconded by Fianna Fáil Cllr Paschal McEvoy at the December meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
