A Laois secondary school is reaching out to older generations in their town in a heartwarming project to "learn, laugh and grow" from each other.

Their teacher Anna Ward explained the project to the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

"The aims of the project are to collect stories and history of participants.  This includes significant events that happened, food they ate growing up, games they played, sports they may have done, music they listened to, how events such as Christmas was celebrated and changes to the local area over the years.

"By the end of the year, we hope to create a book containing information collected throughout the year, recipes of both the young and older generation, old wives tales, and cure and remedies from before and now," she said.

The project began in early November and a Christmas concert concluded the project for 2023. It will resume on Wednesday, March 6.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for the students to witness and record their local history. Through participating, students have developed their social skills and gained an awareness, and an appreciation for the older generation in their community," Anna Ward said.placeholder image

Her students are enjoying it.

"It was brilliant. We got to talk to people we never get a chance to talk to. We learned about the old days and learned lots we didn't know before" Katy Dunne and Muireann Dunne said.
