A growing secondary school in Portlaoise has been approved for six more classrooms.

Portlaoise College on the Mountrath Road is continuing to grow in numbers, and now they are to get a new science room, engineering room and four standard classrooms, all of prefabricated modular construction.

The school which has over 800 students, is patronised by the Laois Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB), and shares a campus with third level college Portlaoise Institute.

Minister of State at the Department of Finance, Fianna Fáil Laois TD Sean Fleming announced the approval.

"I am pleased that Portlaoise College has been given initial approval for a new modular school extension, by the Minister for Education.

"This initial approval to deliver 4 new classrooms, 1 new engineering room and 1 new science lab is very welcome news for the school community and will cater for the growing number of students in Portlaoise College.

"The project has been directly devolved to the Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB).

"I look forward to the LOETB progressing this project as quickly as possible.

"This new school extension will further add to the excellent facilities that Portlaoise College has to offer.

"Education is a key priority for Fianna Fáil in Government. It is important to invest in education, and in turn invest in young people’s futures. Education is the key to young people’s success," Minister Fleming said.
