Laois secure All-Ireland Badminton crown
It's Laois' second year in a row to win an All Ireland title
The Laois badminton team have been crowned the All-Ireland Inter-County Champions at Grade 5/G for 2024.
They competed in the Inter-County Leinster Championship, hosted by Leinster Badminton, in March. They beat Louth, Meath, Wicklow, and Westmeath in the preliminary rounds to become Leinster Champions. They also won the President’s Cup for team of the tournament on the day.
The Victor All Ireland Inter-County Championships were held in the University of Limerick on Sunday, April 28. Laois played in a round robin tournament against Limerick and Galway to be crowned All Ireland Champions for 2024 at Grade 5/G.
Laois won the Leinster and All Ireland titles at Grade 6/H in 2023, with the winning players moving up a grade to compete for 2024. For many of the players, it’s their second All Ireland title in a row.
The team was made up of members from Portlaoise and Mountmellick badminton clubs.
Roy Cobbe, Chairman of Portlaoise Badminton Club and Honorary Life Member for exceptional service to Leinster Badminton, said “It is great to see Laois Badminton doing so well. It is a great achievement for the players for both club and county”.
Portlaoise Badminton Club currently trains in Vicarstown Community Hall on Monday and Thursday evenings from 8pm. Juvenile training is on Sunday mornings from 10am-11:30am. New players are always welcome. They will be hosting a beginners training course in September at the start of the new season.
