A multi-activity day by Laois Sports Partnership in St Mary's Hall in 2026 saw big numbers.

Laois Sports Partnership with hubs in Abbeyleix, Mountrath, Stradbally and elsewhere, runs on an annual deficit

Laois Sports Partnership has made a plea to Laois County Council to formally sign up to financially support its work, because it does not get enough national funding.

The CEO Caroline Myers gave a presentation to Laois County Council, on their 25th anniversary, to explain the years of achievements to get Laois people off the couch and into exercise and sport, saving millions in health costs.

Last year they had over 27,400 participants across five “thriving” community hubs, as well as programmes and training courses. That was a surge of 8,000 people, up 42% in the past four years.

“This growth brings a stark operating reality. We are reaching more people, delivering more programmes and taking on heavier strategic responsibilities, but critically, this has happened without the equivalent increase in support,” she said.

They got €444,000 from Sport Ireland to operate for 2026, but needed about another €190,000.

“Demand is massively outstripping resources. We are 70% funded by Sport Ireland, meaning we face a 30% deficit at the start of each year.

“Without additional investment, risks include poorer programmes, reduced community reach, less support for clubs and volunteers and missed opportunities to improve health and wellbeing.

“The real question isn’t whether we can afford to invest in physical activity, its whether we can afford not to,” she said.

She said that other sports partnerships across Ireland get “significant” funding from their local authorities.

“Either by direct annual funding of between €50k and €105k, or extensive inhouse support in finance, HR and administration.

“Local investment must match our expectations and performance. Our ask is clear, we are seeking a strong partnership with Laois County Council, through a formal Memorandum of Understanding, strategic prioritisation in council policies and plans, and sustainable investment in ongoing annual financial support.

“With increased support from the county council, we can reach more people, reduce those inequalities, strengthen communities and improve the quality of life across the county.

“It’s an investment in health, inclusion, wellbeing and the future of county Laois,” the CEO said.

She said that one in six Laois people do not exercise at all and therefore are more prone to ill health.

“They are our children, parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, friends and neighbours. For a county with a population of 91,877, increasing participation is not just a sporting objective, it’s a community priority,” the CEO said.

“Tackling this inactivity crisis requires a sustained effort across the county. Physical activity is preventative medicine, our work generates €6.8m in health related cost savings, and prevents 1650 cases of chronic illnesses annually right here in Laois,” Ms Myers said.

“Our commitment remains unchanged, to create opportunities for every person in county Laois to participate in sport and physical activity, regardless of age, ability or background.

Ms Myers thanked everyone from their board, to sponsors, to hub volunteers and participants.

“Your dedication and collaboration have shaped our 25 years of success. Together we have made Laois more active, and together we look forward to the next chapter,” the Laois Sports Partnership CEO said.

In reply Director of Services Simon Walton congratulated LSP on their 25th year, on behalf of the CEO Michael Rainey.

“It is a very positive public service, providing critical opportunities for those vulnerable people in society. I’ve attended some events and you see the value of the service. There is an ongoing engagement between the council and LSP, and it’s very important that that continues and grows. We will be considering recreation and sports plans here in coming months. The relationship needs to continue to evolve to respond to the requirements of the day. I know that the council looks forward to working with LSP into the future,” Mr Walton said.

The Cathaoirleach Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald, and Cllrs John Joe Fennelly, Ollie Clooney, Paschal McEvoy, Barry Walsh, John King and James Kelly all thanked her for the work of the organisation to help people of all ages.

LSP’s five community hubs, led by volunteers to bring sport into their communities are Abbeyleix Vitality Club, Rathdowney & Errill Activity club, Mountrath Health & Fitness Academy, SVT Activity & Wellness Hub, and the VIP hub.
