‘Little island would be perfect’ for Laois Lane

A councillor wants Laois County Council to install a traffic island on a Durrow because people driving fast don’t read signs.
Cllr Ollie Clooney, Independent, made the case to officials at a recent meeting.
He called on the local authority to install a turn-right sign on the road at the entrance to Tinweir Lane, Tinweir.
Paul McLoughlin, Senior Engineeer, Roads replied that a junction ahead sign will be installed on the approaches to this junction as requested.
However, while Cllr Clooney asked for a sign and said he appreciated signs, he suggested an alternative.
“A little island would be perfect because a good few people live up the lane in a housing estate,” he said.
He said speed has become a problem and argued that speed signs are n the wrong place. He also claimed that speeding motorists don’t see signs.
He was backed by Cllr John King, Fine Gael.
The issue was raised at the May 2023 meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District.
