There is good news for sports clubs and organisations across Laois with the announcement of €388,415 for Sports Equipment Projects.

All 19 Laois groups that applied for funding have been approved for a grant under the ‘equipment-only’ stream.

The biggest allocation was €65,806 which has been allocated to Laois Hockey Club for the creation of a culture of hockey in Laois.

Other successful projects include equipment for Banríon Gaels Camogie Club Club (€65,077), a  Robotic auto-mower for  Portlaoise Golf Club (€40,000), and an auto-mower for playing pitches at Clonad GAA (€33,890). See below for full list of projects.

Sean Fleming TD, Minister of State, said the grants awarded represent a very high proportion of the cost of the specific equipment applied for by each group.

"I was pleased to speak with Minister Byrne directly in relation to each of the Laois equipment grant applications. I asked him to provide the maximum equipment grant to all applicants from Laois. This grant announcement is great news for these Laois groups and their communities. I look forward to these Laois groups purchasing this equipment as urgently as possible," said Minister Fleming.

"A further announcement will be made as soon as practicable for clubs and organisations that have applied for funding under the ‘capital projects’ category and clubs that have applied under the ‘capital and equipment projects’ category. These applications are now being examined and I am asking the Minister to approve these as soon as this is completed."

"Thanks to the committed volunteers in all the clubs and organisations in Laois who work very hard in their communities to provide wonderful amenities and sporting facilities right on our doorsteps," added Minister Fleming.

Deputy Charlie Flanagan commented: “Active engagement in sports not only helps keep young people healthy, but also builds confidence, independence and promotes team building.

“I know that the Laois clubs and organisations receiving this funding today will make great use of it to the benefit of local communities."
