The incident occurred in the Midlands Prison

A man pleaded guilty to assaulting a prison officer in the Midlands Prison.

Paul Buccafurri, 32, with an address at the Midlands Prison, Dublin Road, Portlaoise is accused of assaulting a prison officer in the prison on December 30, 2022.

Solicitor Philip Meagher said there were “significant psychological issues in the background” and he had previously requested a report.

He said there was a guilty plea to the Section 2 assault on a prison officer which had occurred when his client was serving a sentence.

Mr Meagher said he appreciated that Judge Nicola Andrews would need some to review the contents of the report.

“We have no difficulty with the recommendations in the conclusions at the end of the report,” said Mr Meagher.

He said his client was present at the sitting of Portlaoise District Court with his mother supporting him.

Judge Andrews said she would have to read the report and she asked Mr Meagher if he wanted the case adjourned to a later date.

“Do you want me to get a victim impact statement from the injured party?” Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby asked Judge Andrews.

Judge Andrews requested the victim impact statement and adjourned the matter back to Portlaoise District Court on April 8.
