Man burgled house in Portlaoise

The man appeared before Portlaoise District Court
A victim impact statement is being sought for the sentencing of a man who burgled a house and attempted to break into a car in Portlaoise.
Jason Daly (23) 36 Sean Doire, Durrow pleaded guilty to burglary of a house and attempting to get into a car at Willow Terrace, Portlaoise on September 26, 2024.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant went into the hallway of a house at 3am but left when a dog started barking. He said the owner of the house has severe vision impairment.
When gardaí responded they arrested the man as he attempted to get into a car.
“This gent was trying to gain entry into a car,” said Sgt Kirby.
“Is this a matter where a victim impact statement would be appropriate?” asked Judge Susan Fay.
Sgt Kirby told the sitting of Portlaoise District Court that it might be.
Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client had been dealing with addiction and homelessness at the time of the offending. He said the man is in custody since the start of October and he suggested that a probation report might assist the court.
Judge Fay said “I will ask that the State canvass the occupier of the house” in relation to a victim impact report.
She adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on November 25 for sentence.
