A man admitted causing hundreds of euro in damage to the front door of a former friend’s house.
Craig O’Mara (27) of The Cottage, Morrette, Emo, admitted causing criminal damage to the window of a door of the house at Cullenbeg Park, Mountmellick on May 6 last.
Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said she had compensation in full of €800 at the sitting of Portlaoise District Court.
Judge Andrew Cody noted the incident was described as having arisen as a result of a “personal matter”. He asked if it was related to a debt.
Ms Fitzpatrick said “no, it wasn’t a debt.” She said the householder and the defendant had been friends.
“Why does a friend go knocking down a door?” asked Judge Cody.
Ms Fitzgerald said there had been an issue between them. “He has apologised to her,” she said.
Garda Sergeant Jason Hughes said the defendant had one previous conviction which related to drugs.
Ms Fitzpatrick said her client had “met the case as best he can” and had gathered up the compensation in full despite being out of work.
Judge Cody said the incident had “all the hallmarks of a debt” as he sentenced the man to two months which he suspended for two years. He fixed recognisance in case of appeal.
