The man appeared before a sitting of Portlaoise District Court

A man who was refused entry to a pub began kicking the shutters of an adjacent hair salon.

Szymon Zdrajkowski (21) of 11 Foxcroft Street, Portarlington, pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage to  Katoka Hair Salon, Main Street, Portarlington on January 16, 2026.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the incident occurred at midnight when Gardaí were called to the scene at the hairdressers. “He admitted he kicked and punched the shutters because he had been refused entry to a licenced premises,” said Sgt Kirby.

He said the man had no previous convictions and the damage was estimated to be in the region of €200.

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client was pleading guilty. He said the man had significant underlying difficulties which could explain his behavioural issues. Mr Fitzgerald said the man was “riled up” after being refused admission to a pub beside the hair salon.

“It seems to be a manifestation of his underlying issues,” he told the sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

Mr Fitzgerald said the man had lodged €200 for bail and he would be willing to pay that over.

Judge Susan Fay ordered a  probation report and restorative justice and adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on October 19 for finalisation.
