Man told gardaí he hoped they would die during incident in Laois

The man appeared before Portlaoise District Court
A suspended sentence was handed down to a man who told a garda he hoped they died in a car crash.
Hughie Nevin (25) of 112 Hillview Drive, Portlaoise admitted acting in a threatening and abusive manner at Hillview Drive on March 6, 2021.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said gardaí were called to the area due to reports of people fighting at 2.30am on the date in question.
He said the defendant “became irate” when gardaí arrived and he called a detective an “effing pig and a prick” and “told the detective, I hope you die in a car crash.”
He told the sitting of Portlaoise District Court that the man had 53 previous convictions and was serving a prison sentence.
Solicitor Michael Byrne said his client had a dispute with a neighbour earlier in the night.
“He was still very irritated and unfortunately he took it out on the gardaí who arrived,” he explained.
Judge Andrew Cody granted legal aid and imposed a two month prison sentence which he suspended for three years.
