A man who drove his parents' Mercedes to Portlaoise without any lessons, licence or insurance is now getting psychiatric treatment, a court was told.

Garda Sergeant Jason Hughes said the accused had no previous convictions. He said the incident occurred at 7.35am on the date in question when gardaí pulled over the 212D registered black Mercedes. He said a lawful demand was made to provide insurance and licence but no documents were produced.

Mr Dunnne said there were no documents. “He never even sat any lessons,” he revealed.

Mr Dunne said the defendant’s parents had been having difficulties with the man for some time and he had taken the car without his parent’s knowledge.

Judge Andrew Cody disqualified the man from driving for two years and fined him €400.
