A solictor said the man was 'grateful' to the garda who arrested him

A man who was found intoxicated walking down a rural road at 2.15am was grateful to gardai who arrested him.

Daniel Delaney(19) of 23 Clonkeen View, Bellingham, Portlaoise, pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in public on the Balladine Road, Abbeyleix on June 23, 2024.

Garda Darren Digan said the defendant was arrested for his own safety as he was highly intoxicated while walking down a rural road at 2.15am. He said the teenager was issued a fine but he failed to pay it.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby told a sitting of Portlaoise District Court that the defendant had one previous conviction.

Solicitor Philip Meagher said his client is “very thankful” that Garda Digan came along. He said his client had been drinking with an older brother on the date in question. He said they were a family who had “been dealing with a lot of things” because “their dad disappeared in sinister circumstances”. He said the family had all been upset about their father’s disappearance.

Judge Susan Fay referred the man to the alternative project and adjourned the matter back to Portlaoise District Court on October 6 for finalisation.
