Man was ‘roaring and shouting’ near playing children in Laois

The man appeared at a sitting of Portlaoise District Court
An intoxicated man was ‘roaring and shouting’ near where children were at play, a sitting of Portlaoise District Court was told.
Liam Carroll (39) of 175 St Brigid’s Place, Portlaoise, pleaded guilty to being intoxicated and engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour at St Brigid’s Place, Portlaoise on May 20 last.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant was observed by Gardaí on patrol in the area at 8.25pm.
“He was roaring and shouting. He was unsteady on his feet,” said Sgt Kirby. He said there were people around at the time including children who were playing nearby.
Sgt Kirby said the man, who has 66 previous convictions, had to be arrested but was “ok” once he sobered up. He said the man’s last conviction dated back to December 2023. “I haven’t seen him in court in a long time,” he remarked.
Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client, who was in receipt of disability allowance, was pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity. She said a family issue had arisen on the date of the offence and had been "rendered homeless” as a result of the incident.
Judge Susan Fay adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on July 6.
