Man who crashed into St Patrick’s Day Parade admits driving uninsured

The man appeared before a sitting of Portlaoise District Court
A driving ban was handed down to a man who had previously been involved in a collision with a mini steam engine during a St Patrick’s Day Parade in Laois.
Raymond Anthony Barrett (60) of Luggacurran, Stradbally, appeared before Portlaoise District Court accused of driving without insurance at Main Street, Stradbally on September 21, 2024.
Judge Andrew Cody told the defendant, who appeared in court with a mobility aid, that he was accused of not having insurance in Stradbally on the date.
“I didn’t. I thought I had. I haven’t driven since,” the man replied.
Judge Cody noted the man had been involved in the incident on St Patrick’s Day.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the man had 15 previous convictions, 14 of which were road traffic related. He said the man was currently disqualified.
Judge Cody said he would take the man’s word that he was no longer driving. He disqualified him from driving for six years and fined him €200.
