Man appears before Portlaoise District Court

A man who recently appeared before Portlaoise District Court was arrested by gardaí for a public order incident, while celebrating the second day of a wedding.

Thomas McKeon (36) of Ashgrove, Ballybrittas was arrested by gardaí for his safety on 22 June 2025 at 3:40am in Market Square, Portarlington.

Garda sergeant JJ Kirby told Judge Andrew Cody that the accused’s most recent conviction was in 2025 for having no insurance, and that there was an older charge for criminal damages in 2011 at Tullamore District Court.

“He is 36, has a dependent child, works in retail and it was the second day of a wedding,” defending solicitor Mr Phillip Meagher told the court.

Mr Meagher explained that the accused had little memory of the incident, and is very embarrassed.

“He knows that gardaí have more serious things to do, than look after people in that state,” Mr Meagher said.

Judge Cody ordered the accused to pay €500 to the Little Blue Heroes charity. The amount was paid in court, and Judge Cody ordered that the matter be struck out.
