Portlaoise Sinn Féin councillor highlights state of rural laneway

A "massive hole" on a laneway leading to a famous Laois holy well was reported at a recent meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.

St Fintan's holy well is in Cromogue Lane near Abbeyleix, an attraction for religious and heritage visitors.

Sinn Féin Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley tabled a motion to the district, to ask for repairs and drainage on the laneway leading to it.

"Parts of it are in a bad way. There are five houses on the lane. It needs to be resurfaced. It is used a lot by walkers and visitors to the holy well.

"Since a notice of motion, there were some works done but they are not adequate. There is a massive hole on one side. People are unhappy with the way it has been left," she said.

In reply the district engineer Wes Wilkinson said that he would meet the councillor on site, with a view to carrying out works as required.
