Plans are to be drawn up on how to develop land on the outskirts of Portlaoise as the Laois capital town continues to grow rapidly.

Laois County Council has announced that a steering group has been formed to guide developments at Aughnaharna, which lies off the Stradbally Road in the town.

They say that the group includes stakeholders such as landowners and council officials.

The masterplan will cover the land from the Southern Circular Road to Rathleague, where Portlaoise GAA has its home ground.

"The masterplan will look at transport links for the lands taking account of current land uses and proposed land uses," the council stated in its report to the January meeting.

The Aughnaharna and Stradbally road are has experienced rapid growth in the past two decades, with hundreds more houses and apartments and more under construction, the new Southern Circular Road, a shopping centre and five schools locating there.
