What should replace the famous Laois Christmas tree?

As Christmas gets closer and the second year looms without the famous Christmas tree in Mountmellick, ideas are wanted for what will replace it.

Mountmellick Christmas Tree Committee is gathering the public's ideas for what is now the Valley Star Project, born from "the valley" name locals call the town.

It is holding a series of workshops and has just announced that the next one will take place this Saturday, October 12 in Mountmellick Library from 11am to 1pm.

"All welcome to participate in this creative workshop to reimagine Mountmellick's future Christmas tree at Mountmellick Library on Sat Oct 12, 11am - 1pm. No booking required.

"Martina Coyle and another artist will be there to welcome you and give a hand if wanted to create together. No experience required. All ideas welcome. Come along for the cuppa. Looking forward to seeing you all," the committee say.

A real Christmas tree glistening with simple white lights replaced it on year one, with two to follow this year, and a final, sustainable permanent structure planned by Christmas 2025. Its focus will be one of climate action and low energy use. The project is supported by Creative Climate Action. For more email [email protected]
