Mystery 'large steel structure' an eyesore for Portlaoise residents

A steel structure is going to be taken down at the entrance to a Portlaoise housing estate, on request by a local councillor who said it is an "eyesore".
Cllr Thomasina Connell who recently requested that auctioneers be prevented from putting advertising signs at the entrance to Esker Hills, now seeks the removal of the structure.
It’s use is not clear, she said.
She suggests that it is once carried advertising boards for the estate, built during the Celtic Tiger in the early 2000s by Laois company Owenass Developments.
"It is a steel structure adjacent to the lake. There are 515 homes in Esker Hills, it is the second biggest estate after Kilminchy in Portlaoise.
"We have just got used to looking at it. I believe it was an advertising sign. A couple of people say it is an eyesore. We need to know what it was originally used for. There are three steel pieces arund it, it's not fitting in with the look of the estate," Cllr Connell said.
She tabled a motion with her request to the September meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.
In reply, Wes Wilkinson engineer for the district, said the structure will be examined in the coming weeks "with a view to having it removed".
