No space for emergency vehicles in built up Portlaoise housing estate
Laois County Council promising to paint double yellow lines
A Portlaoise housing estate in a heavily built up residential area was recently inaccessible to an ambulance and fire truck, a Laois councillor claims, due to poor parking.
Labour Cllr Marie Tuohy tabled a motion to the November meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, about Rathevan Close, a section of the large Rathevan housing development off the Borris Road and Collier's Lane.
She is asking Laois County Council to paint double yellow lines as the road curves into Rathevan Close.
"The problem is the number of houses and the number of cars. There are not enough spaces to park so people are parking on the kerb. In the last few months emergency vehicles, ambulances couldn't get through.
"We all know the consequences of a delay of an ambulance or the fire brigade," she said.
In reply, senior engineer Wes Wilkinson said that the Portlaoise MD office will arrange to install double yellow lines near the green area at the entrance to Rathevan Close.
