Cllr Aidan Mullins requested the change on behalf of the residents

An estate in Laois is asking the council to impose a one way traffic system.

Sinn Fein Cllr Aidan Mullins made the request on behalf of the residents at a recent meeting.

He asked in a motion: “That Laois County Council consider the request from the residents of Marian Hill in Portarlington to make it one way traffic in their estate.”

In a written response, Senior Executive Engineer, James Dowling said: “Laois  County Council Road Design section will meet with Councillor Mullins and the Area Engineer, Mr Philip McVeigh to review the possibility of a one way system in Marion Hill.”

Welcoming the response, Cllr Mullins said the request had come from the residents.

“It is very, very narrow. It is an old estate, two way traffic can be restrictive,” he remarked.

“They feel you should not be able to pull in there once you cross the bridge… They would prefer to see it turning right going down the Bishopwood Road,” he said.

Fine Gael Cllr PJ Kelly seconded the motion which he said “makes complete sense”.

“It would be safer coming in from the Bishopwood side,” he said.

The issue was discussed at the latest meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
