People are having to lift bikes over gate in Laois to access a canal

Laois County Council was asked to contact Waterways Ireland in relation to the issue
People are having to lift bikes over a gate in Laois to access the canal, a council meeting has heard.
Fine Gael Cllr Vivienne Phelan asked Laois County Council to contact Waterways Ireland with a view to improving the access at the location.
She asked in a motion “that Laois County Council write to Waterways Ireland to ask that the canal gate at Courtwood be upgraded to facilitate easy and safe access for wheelchair users, cyclists, and prams on the route.”
In a written response, Senior Engineer, Adrian Barrett said “Laois County Council can arrange for a letter to be issued to Waterways Ireland to consider the elected members request.”
Cllr Phelan said the issue had been raised by a number of residents in the area.
“It is lovely along the canal there. It would be nice if that would be available,” she said.
She explained that “we have people trying to lift bikes over the gate currently.”
