There was plenty of educational fun during an event for National Biodiversity Week held in Durrow where participants got the opportunity to test the water quality in the local river. Nore Vision held an evening of biological water sampling to determine the water quality of the River Erkina, one of the tributaries to the River Nore, a protected site in Laois. They discovered that the river currently holds a “good status” in environmental health—an encouraging sign of its biodiversity. The Erkina plays an important role in supporting the broader ecological health of the Nore system, which is home to species of high conservation value, including the Irish pearl mussel, one of Ireland’s most endangered freshwater invertebrates. Photographer Denis Byrne attended the event and took these photos.
